William Tecumseh Sherman was a U.S. military officer and a successful military engineer, who served in the American Civil War, with distinction. He is probably most famous for his successful campaigns of 1864-65 that led to the capture of Atlanta and the fall of the Confederate capital at Richmond in 1865. Later in his career, Sherman was involved in the Indian Wars of the west, including the Bannock War and Snake War.
